Veterinary Technician

The veterinary technician is the primary support to the doctors and patients. The veterinary technician must be able to pay attention to detail, respond quickly and calmly to crises, and maintain very high standards of patient care. The veterinary technician must be able to communicate well with clients and team members, showing care and concern for their pets. This position reports to the hospital manager.

Veterinary Technician Job Duties:

  • Assist doctors in restraint and treatment of patients
  • Enter doctor/technician services into the computer and patient record
  • Fill prescriptions and prepare medications as prescribed by the veterinarian
  • Perform routine laboratory analyses, including hematology, serology, blood chemistry, urinalysis, fecal analysis, and skin scrapings
  • Give treatment/injections/medications by doctor’s orders
  • Place/maintain i.v./urinary catheters
  • Monitor critical patients, follow and complete treatments as listed on the whiteboard
  • Collect blood for internal and external laboratory analysis, and prepare corresponding paperwork
  • Maintain pharmacy, laboratory, radiology inventory, and surgery logs daily
  • Administer oral drugs, injections, wound dressings, and fluid therapy as directed by the DVM
  • Administer and monitor anesthesia in accordance with state regulations and AAHA standards
  • Perform routine dental cleanings in accordance to state regulations and AAHA standards
  • Perform sterile surgical preparation of surgery sites according to AAHA standards
  • Assist in surgery, including gowning surgeon, patient monitoring, suture selection, etc.
  • Maintain lab and surgical supplies and equipment, including autoclaved items, surgery packs, ultrasound equipment, anesthesia machines, centrifuge, and microscope according to hospital protocol
  • Clean/sanitize surgery areas, treatment, laboratory, kennel, and exam rooms daily
  • Take/export radiographs (dental and digital), including proper submission to telemedicine or outside specialists
  • Perform/submit ECG readings
  • Perform emergency procedures, including: control bleeding, administering parenteral fluids and pharmacological agents under veterinary supervision, resuscitate with oxygen, establish open airway breathing by intubation, perform external cardiac massage, apply temporary bandages or splints, provide external supportive treatment or wounds, burns, and heat exhaustion.
  • Provide client education regarding nutrition, parasite control, vaccination protocols, spaying and neutering, behavior/fear free and all other routine procedures
  • Counsel clients regarding home care, medication administration, and post-operative cases
  • Assist with inventory control and product ordering
  • Assist receptionists as needed
  • Perform tasks assigned to the veterinary assistants and kennel staff as needed

Required:
Must be able to lift 50 pounds and remain standing for long periods of time as needed to maintain desk operation.

Operating Hours: Monday thru Friday 7:30am to 5pm

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provides great care for patients visiting the practice for grooming and / or boarding.
  • Ensures patients are admitted noting the client’s specific instructions to ensure a quality outcome including contact information and pick up time.
  • Accurately and legibly records information related to the patient such as feeding schedules, appearance, and behavior during practice visit.
  • Observes patient’s appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent.
  • Appropriately handles patients and as needed, properly restrains hard-to-control patients.
  • Walks patients several times a day to provide exercise and time for elimination of bowels and bladder.
  • Applies knowledge of normal food and liquid requirements and as required, provides special food and liquids.
  • Ensures patients are clean and fresh smelling and have been checked by a Technician / Doctor prior to discharge; ensures patient has all personal property upon exit.
  • Ensures cages and patients are properly numbered and identified and that personal property (toys, treats, blankets, leashes) are stored in the proper areas and identified.
  • Regularly cleans, disinfects and maintain kennels, cages, runs and stalls as often as is necessary to ensure no cages or kennels are soiled and odors are not apparent. Performs general cleaning in other areas of the hospital to control the spread of disease. Washes and sterilizes water and food bowls.

Essential Responsibilities continued

  • Launders and dries towels and blankets.
  • Walks hospital grounds regularly and cleans any trash and stool material; empties trash throughout the practice and grounds.
  • In some practices and based on veterinary practice experiences and confidence:
  • Assists with the administration of medications under the supervision of Doctors or Technicians; assists with the administration of medications, post-operative care or preparation of samples for laboratory examination, collect specimens, clean instruments, fill prescriptions as authorized.
  • Provides bathing and grooming services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Ability to work Part-time
  • Ability to work on weekends
  • Experience with animal care and handling
  • Previous veterinary experience preferred
  • Ability to lift patients up to 25 pounds; ability to lift patients over 25 pounds with assistance
  • Practices OSHA safety techniques including proper PPE

Expected hours: 10 – 20 per week
